Forest Cemetery was established in 1840 when Benjamin F. Stickney sold 8 acres of land to the City of Toledo. Prior to that, 2 other cemeteries existed: a public cemetery at Madison Avenue & 16th Street; another on Edward Bissell's private property at LaGrange and Bancroft. Burials and tombstones in these cemeteries were transferred to Forest after 1840. Today Forest Cemetery encompasses about 95 acres.
